WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Since Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban -- who was welcomed to the White House on Monday -- took office in 2010, his government and its allies have steadily taken control of about 90% of the media outlets in the country.
During that time, the percentage of Hungarians who say the media in their country have a lot of freedom has dropped 50 percentage points, hitting a new low of 37% in 2018. This is the lowest for any country in the European Union, where the median who say the media have a lot of freedom is 73%.
